St George's in Church Gresley has been forced to shut its doors
St Georges and St Mary's Church that is located on Church Street in Church Gresley has been forced to close due to a leaking roof and falling masonry.
The Grade II* church that is the oldest St Georges in the UK is built on the site of a priory that dates from 1135 and has links to the Gresley's. Sir Nigel Gresley was the UK's most famous locomotive engineer being the designer of the LNER Pacific steam engines that include the Flying Scotsman.
Having a thriving congregation, the closure comes as a blow to many in the local community with the doors last being locked over 80 years ago when in 1934 it was also the poor state of the structure that forced the church to close.
It is now hoped that a money can be found from grant providers including Historic England and the Heritage Lottery Fund to complete the immediate repairs.
