National Maintenance Week
The Society for the Protection of Ancient Buildings (SPAB) kicks of their maintenance week today and now is the time to get outside and give your building its annual MOT.
Carrying out minor maintenance tasks now, can help to prevent easily remedied problems from developing into costly repairs. One of the issues which cause many problems to escalate is water ingress with this often causing plaster to perish, timber to rot and walling materials of decay.
To prevent these and other water damage you need to check;
Roofs - for slipped and missing tiles, slates and other coverings. Flashing and flaunching for cracks, splits and to make sure it is still in place.
Rainwater Goods- for damage, missing sections and leaks. Blockages to gutters, downpipes and the below ground drainage they connect to.
Walls – for perished mortar joints and render surfaces. Adjacent ground levels are not higher than finished floor levels and that surfaces which abut slope away from the wall and allow for drainage.
Don’t forget that safety is paramount whilst undertaking these tasks and correct access equip should be used with inspections being undertaken by those who possess the relevant skills.
