Swadlincote Townscape Heritage
Swadlincote a town within South Derbyshire has been awarded £400,000 from the Heritage Lottery Fund for the Townscape Heritage Scheme. The money will be used to help improve the special historic character of Swadlincote town centre’s Conservation Area and get people involved in the town’s heritage.
Properties in the Conservation Area will be eligible for grants for repairs and improvements to historic buildings, including windows, doors, shop fronts and distinctive architectural features.
The project is now at the delivery stage with work being undertaken within the town and events are being run for the public and schools. These events include activities which will help local people to learn about the industrial and social heritage of Swadlincote. They will include guided walks and talks, self-led town trails and ‘have a go’ activities. Training and education activities will be provided for people who own/ manage properties in the Conservation Area and for local builders.
Schools groups will have their own bespoke sessions and some have already been developed and any education providers who are interested in these should send contact the Environmental Project Team on 01283 535039 or email firstname.lastname@example.org
The Heritage Trust is excited to be include within this great project through their involvement with the Swadlincote Town Team. The Swadlincote Town Team is a partnership of businesses, organisations, volunteers and local residents who care passionately about their local town. They are working in partnership with South Derbyshire District Council and Swadlincote and District Chamber of Trade to promote ‘Swadlincote: Market Town of The National Forest’, and to create an even safer and pleasanter environment in which to shop and visit. It is hoped that one of the outcomes of the project will be the development of a Swadlincote Heritage Tail which will focus on the Conservation Area of the town whilst also including important historical buildings in the wider area. The trail will include plaques fixed on the historical buildings of interest plus additional information online and in leaflets. Work is already underway in compiling the trail with buildings for inclusion being suggested and commented on via a Facebook page which has been set-up for this purpose. The Heritage Trust aims to get The Bretby Art Pottery Showroom included in this trail and is also giving their backing to the other buildings which have been suggested.
