Located in the historical core of the city of Derby and within a conservation area the Smiths Clockwork building has been redundant since the clock making firm moved out in the late 1998.
Originally the site included additional building being used for workshops at the rear of the Queen Street frontage, but these were demolished shortly after the business vacated.A planning application threatened the demolition of the Queen Street Building in 2003 which
prompted renewed attempts to have the building listed nationally and prompted a group of
squatters to take up residence in the building with the intention of protecting it. Now though still not listed nationally it has been recognised to be important to Derby and has been included on the local list.
